Minnehaha Falls Engagement

If you’ve ever dreamt of being wrapped up in romance while surrounded by lush greenery, historic stonework, and the soothing sounds of a waterfall, then let me introduce you to your new favorite photo spot: Minnehaha Falls in St. Paul, Minnesota. This Minnehaha Falls engagement session was everything sweet, sentimental, and serene, and I’m so excited to share the magic.

Minnesota might be known for its lakes, but this park is the main character when it comes to waterfall views in the Twin Cities. It’s not just a great place for a picnic or a leisurely hike. It’s also one of my favorite spots for capturing authentic love stories.

A Little Waterfall History

Minnehaha Falls is located in Minnehaha Regional Park, one of Minneapolis’ oldest and most cherished public spaces. The name “Minnehaha” comes from the Dakota language and translates to “curling water” or “waterfall.”

Standing at 53 feet tall, the waterfall is a showstopper in every season. In the summer, it’s a lush green haven. In winter, it freezes into a magical ice sculpture. But no matter the season, it gives every photo a little extra drama and romance. The falls were even mentioned in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem, The Song of Hiawatha, which means your engagement photos get a literary shoutout too. Not too shabby!

This Sweet Couple

These two brought the charm and then some. They showed up in coordinated whites—she in a soft, flowy dress and he in a crisp polo and jeans—which contrasted beautifully with the rich greens of the park. Their outfits were simple, clean, and completely perfect for the natural setting.

They laughed. They snuggled. They had those quiet moments that say everything without a single word. Capturing that kind of real connection is always my favorite part of an engagement session.

We started the session near one of the walking paths surrounded by wild grasses and trees that seemed to lean in just for them. There’s something so peaceful about these tucked-away spots. They let couples be themselves, away from the bustle of the main falls, and they make room for those candid moments that mean so much.

Why Minnehaha Falls is a Total Gem for Engagement Sessions

Let’s talk about why this place should be high on your engagement session wishlist:

  • The variety: You’ve got the iconic falls, rustic stone bridges, woodsy trails, flower-filled gardens, and open grassy areas. That’s basically five locations in one.
  • Romantic vibes: Something about the sound of rushing water just makes everything feel a little more romantic. Plus, the light reflecting off the mist near the falls? Chef’s kiss.
  • Easy access: Even though it feels like a nature escape, Minnehaha Falls is right in the city. You can hop out of your car and into a dreamy backdrop within minutes.
  • Seasonal magic: Whether it’s spring blossoms, summer greens, fall foliage, or winter frost, this park always has something special going on.

Planning Your Own Minnehaha Falls Engagement Session

If you’re thinking, “Okay, yes, this sounds perfect,” here are a few tips to help you make the most of your session:

  • Wear comfy shoes. There’s a bit of walking involved, especially if you want those gorgeous waterfall shots or to explore the upper and lower trails.
  • Golden hour is your best friend. The lighting at sunset filters beautifully through the trees, giving everything a soft, romantic glow.
  • Bring a change of clothes. If you want a mix of casual and formal, this spot has enough versatility to accommodate both.
  • Check the crowds. This place is popular, especially on weekends. Weekday evenings tend to be quieter.
  • Don’t forget the permits. If you’re bringing a professional photographer (hi, it’s me!), be sure to check ahead about whether a photography permit is needed.

Let’s Talk Favorite Moments

There was this one moment where they sat on a bench, leaned into each other, and just shared a soft laugh. Nothing dramatic. Just them, being them. That’s the kind of magic I live for.

Or the kiss in the middle of the winding path, surrounded by tall grasses? Pure romance. And when the sun peeked through the trees at just the right moment, it felt like even nature was cheering them on.

Whether you’re planning a full wedding or an intimate elopement, capturing your love in a place like this sets the tone for everything to come. I always tell my couples: find a spot that feels like you. If that means quiet paths, lush greenery, and the sound of falling water in the background, then Minnehaha Falls just might be your perfect match.
