There’s something undeniably magical about the Como Zoo Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota. Maybe it’s the lush greenery, maybe it’s the charming historic glasshouse, or maybe it’s the flamingos. Whatever it is, this place knows how to bring the romantic vibes—and that made it the perfect spot for this Como Zoo Conservatory engagement session.

This couple brought the sweet, soft energy you always hope for, and the setting did the rest. From playful strolls under the towering trees to those quiet, cozy moments surrounded by plants that look like they belong in a rainforest, this session had all the warm and fuzzy feelings. So let’s take a little tour through the photos and talk about why Como Conservatory is such a dreamy place for engagement portraits.

Why Choose the Como Zoo Conservatory for Your Engagement Session?

First off, if you’ve never been to Como Zoo and Conservatory, you’re in for a treat. It’s one of the most beloved places in St. Paul for a reason. The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory opened in 1915 and has been serving up major botanical garden goals ever since. Think tropical palms, fragrant orchids, and light that somehow makes everyone look like a literal angel.

The zoo and conservatory are part of Como Park, which spans more than 400 acres and includes everything from picnic spots to swan ponds. But for engagement sessions, the real star is the conservatory and its surroundings. It’s like stepping into another world, one filled with storybook charm and tons of photo potential.

One of my favorite things about photographing couples here is the sheer variety. There are quiet walking paths for those intimate hand-holding shots. There are dramatic architectural elements, like the glass dome of the conservatory, that add elegance and a little grandeur. And there are always, always pockets of perfect natural light waiting to be discovered.

A Stroll Through the Session

We started the session just outside the conservatory, where the trees filtered the golden evening sun in the dreamiest way. These two were naturals in front of the camera. Seriously, they made my job so easy. There was laughter, stolen kisses, and that kind of effortless connection you can’t fake.

They wore a classic black and white combo that popped beautifully against all the lush greenery. Her black dress had the perfect movement, and his light shirt and jeans kept things clean and casual. Together, they struck that balance of dressed-up but relaxed, which is exactly what works at this location.

As we wandered the garden paths, we paused every time the light did something magical. One of my favorite shots is them sharing a laugh in the middle of the path, surrounded by towering trees and dappled sunlight. It’s romantic, a little playful, and totally authentic.

A Little History for the Nature Lovers

The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory is more than just a pretty face. It’s a piece of St. Paul history and one of the few remaining Victorian-style glasshouses in the United States. It’s open year-round, which means engagement photos are always an option, whether you want lush summer vibes or cozy winter greenery.

Inside, it’s divided into themed rooms, including the Sunken Garden, the Palm Dome, and the Fern Room. While we stayed mostly outdoors for this session, knowing that those indoor spaces are an option makes this location incredibly versatile—especially if Minnesota’s unpredictable weather decides not to cooperate.

Another bonus? Admission is free. That’s right. You can have an elegant, garden-filled engagement session without shelling out a rental fee. Just be sure to check their hours and any photography policies ahead of time.

Tips for Planning Your Own Como Zoo Conservatory Engagement Session

If you’re considering this spot for your own engagement session, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Go for golden hour. The way the light filters through the trees and reflects off the conservatory is pure magic during the last hour of the day.
  • Stick with simple, clean outfits that let the surroundings shine. Earth tones, black and white, or soft pastels all photograph beautifully here.
  • Be prepared to walk a bit. There’s so much to explore, and the best photos often happen in the in-between moments.
  • If you’re planning to shoot inside the conservatory, call ahead to confirm current rules for professional photography.

Wrapping Up With Love (and a Few More Laughs)

By the end of our time together, it felt like we’d just taken a lovely evening walk through the park—one that just so happened to include some super sweet photos. That’s the kind of energy I love to create for engagement sessions. No pressure, no stiff posing, just you two being in love in a place that feels a little bit magical.

The Como Zoo Conservatory has this calm, romantic atmosphere that brings out the best in couples. It’s not flashy or over-the-top. It’s timeless, peaceful, and full of quiet beauty. And that makes it one of my favorite places to photograph love stories in the Twin Cities.

If you’re planning your own engagement session in St. Paul and want something that feels equal parts natural and elegant, this might just be your perfect spot. I’d love to help you capture it.
